Accident Victim through Barbed WireBarbed Wire Accident Friday 26 October 2007, approximately 14h00.

Netcare 911 paramedics responded to a report of a serious collision on the corners of Jan Smuts avenue and Sherwood road in the Westcliff area, Johannesburg.

Paramedics arrived on scene to find that a car and a small drop-side truck had been involved in a partial head-on collision, it appears that the truck had skidded over a section of the middle island during rainy weather. The driver of the truck was found lying out of the drivers door and his legs were pinned in the wreckage. Fire fighters had to use the “jaws of life” to free him – he had suffered severe injuries and was in a serious condition. The trucks front passenger confessed to not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle and came to rest on top of a row of barbed wire fencing that was acting as a security barrier as the front wall of the property had been removed during building renovations. She was in pain and bystanders removed her from the sharp fence before paramedics arrived. She sustained multiple lacerations and several possible fractures. In total; paramedics attended to six patients on the scene and they were transported by ambulances to the Netcare Milpark hospital and the Netcare Garden City clinic.

This incident was attended to by paramedics from the private and provincial ambulance services, local fire department and the Metro Police.

Two lanes of traffic on Jan smuts travelling towards town were closed to traffic for over an hour and this resulted in a severe backlog.
