Lucky escape as bakkie flies over edge of freeway

Two men narrowly missed severe injury or worse as they flew over the edge of the M1 freeway on Saturday afternoon and landed their bakkie ’safely’ on Empire Road, without hitting any other vehicles. It was an estimated 30m drop to the road below.

The driver of the bakkie lost control while towing a large trailer, the trailer did not go over the edge but stayed on the freeway as it came to rest on top of another vehicle,not injuring anyone.

Both men were treated and stabilised on scene before being transported to hospital by Netcare 911, in a stable condition.

Several similar accidents in the same vicinity,have proved to be fatal, so it is no doubt these men were extremely lucky.

Four fatalities in Sandton collision

Paramedics and fire-fighters responded to a motor vehicle accident this morning on Rivonia Road in Sandton. One vehicle was involved, the driver of the vehicle lost control around a bend and the car skidded sideways into an advertising billboard situated on the pavement.

All four occupants were killed in the accident. Fire-fighters used hydraulic extrication equipment to free the victims from the wreckage. Metro police investigators were in attendance and took control of the scene.

People in the office block directly behind the accident site were already at work and said they heard the screeching of tyres and a very loud bang, they phoned emergency services immediately.
