As we enter the festive season we are invited to many corporate functions and end of year parties. On Facebook we find photos of friends celebrating at these events with glasses lifted to toast the successes of a year gone by!
This has been an awesome sporting year for South Africans with a famous Rugby World Cup Win and many other successes. We have however also lost many friends and relatives and unfortunately many of these passed away in fatal road accidents!
Drunk driving is one of the biggest threats to road safety and millions of rands are devoted to responsible drinking campaigns. Responsible driving is a personal choice and we need to ask ourselves whether we have the discipline to make the right decisions…How much do we treasure our friendships and do we care for the safety of our friends? There is a well known slogan in support of responsible drinking – “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk!”. At the end of 2007 it is time that we carry this slogan with us to our end of year functions!
The Road Safety & Arrive Alive Blog would like to recommend the following safety tips:
• Golden rule: When you drink – don’t drive!
• More than 2 drinks and you may be beyond the legal limit for driving!
• If you plan to drink – arrange for a designated driver to take you home.
• Care for your friends – don’t risk having regrets at their funeral!
• Show strength – it is the weaker person who cannot say NO!
