Do not compromise the safety of passengers!

3 03 2008

Do not compromise the safety of passengers! KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Bheki Cele says the safety of eight of the people who died in this morning’s accident at Shongweni had already been compromised by the fact that they were being transported on the back of a bakkie.

Cele was speaking at the scene of the accident on the N3 west of Durban where 10 people died. Four were seriously injured and airlifted to hospital. Cele says people are not adhering to the law.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the mornings accidents have risen to 25. A truck allegedly swerved to miss a pothole on the P272 between Dundee and Osizweni and collided head-on with an oncoming minibus taxi. Among the 12 passengers who died was a four-year-old child. Five others were critically injured.

In another accident, three people were killed when their vehicle overturned near Mtubatuba, on the North Coast.

The Arrive Alive Road Safety website would like to express condolences to the relatives of those who passed away in these accidents.
