Possible reasons for not driving lights-on in the rain….

driving with lights on If there was a study course for Road Safety 101, there might be a question such as “Explain why some motorists drive without their lights on in the rain”. A possible answer could be the following:

1. Stupidity! Some drivers might not have the intellectual capacity to understand that they are not visible to other road users in the rain.
2. License was bought! It is possible that the driver did not pass his learners license and does not know that this is a requirement.
3. Low levels of concentration! Perhaps even though the driver has his thoughts elsewhere he does not have the concentration to facilitate an understanding that there is a reason why hundreds of other vehicles drive with their lights on!

These comments are rather “tongue in the cheek” but also an indication of my levels of frustration. With rainy weather across South Africa, the Arrive Alive road safety website received 2 emails earlier today from concerned citizens requesting that we highlight the importance of lights-on in rainy weather.

On my way back home from work I saw several motorists driving in the rain without their lights – and some with only their parking lights!

Let us follow the Rules of the Road and drive with our lights on during rainy weather – and not be accused by our fellow road users of blatant stupidity!!
