How do I find out who is that driver?

23 03 2008

How do I find out who is that driver? The Arrive Alive Road Safety website received a request for assistance in finding out the identity of a vehicle owner. This request was received from a tyre retailer in Durban. It is alleged by the retailer that the owner of a specific vehicle had tyres fitted and simply left without paying. It is interesting that the vehicle owner introduced herself as Mrs Martin and provided an incorrect cellular number. Information made available includes the make of vehicle and the registration number at the time…

I referred this to my friends at eNaTIS and received the following response:

“Should you wish to get owner particulars of a vehicle, the SAPS are the correct people to contact. You have to open a case of theft. The police will probably not give you the owner’s particulars themselves but will investigate the matter. Remember there is also a possibility that the licence plate could have been falsified.”

In short it is important to note that details are available if the correct details can be provided. It is also important that individuals cannot directly request these particulars as privacy and security considerations have to be taken into account.

It is also important to note that we must approach with caution individuals who might have fraudulent intentions when presenting their vehicles for repairs or for the purchase of vehicle related equipment!
