Netcare 911 responds to 465 collisions in 96 hours of Easter

24 03 2008

Netcare 911 responds to 465 collisions in 96 hours of Easter In the past 96 hours, since 11am on Thursday morning 20 March 2008, the Netcare 911 call centre has dispatched emergency vehicles to 465 collision scenes throughout South Africa. These numbers comprise of 411 motor vehicle collisions and 54 pedestrian collisions.

At this stage the most incidents have occurred in Gauteng with paramedics attending to more than 160 incidents in Jhb, Pta and the Vaal areas followed by Kzn with more than 120 incidents.

Traditionally this is a very busy time of year for emergency services and unfortunately the numbers of collisions are expected to increase as traffic volumes increase dramatically on the major routes today.

Motorists are advised as follows:

  1. to take extra care whilst on the roads
  2. switch vehicles head lights on to become more visible to other road users
  3. do not exceed the speed limit
  4. ensure all the occupants of your vehicle are wearing their safety belts
  5. avoid driver fatigue- stop and rest every 2 hours or 200km or when you feel the need to rest or stretch
  6. do not drink and drive and rest well before undertaking long journeys.
  7. Motorists are reminded to plan their trips carefully remembering that heavy traffic volumes may cause delays especially at some of the busier toll gates.
