Emergency services personnel responded to a motorcycle collision on Sunday morning 6 April 2008.
A motorcyclist had collided with a truck as the truck turned into Kya Sands, North of Randburg. The motorcycle and rider then ended up partly under another motor vehicle, by now both vehicles and the rider were covered in flames.Passing motorists stopped and fortunately one of them was able to extinguish the rider whose leather outfit was on fire. The full leather kit did a lot to protect him, however the male bike rider still sustained serious burns to both legs and lower body as well as a shoulder injury sustained during the fall. A passing Netcare doctor also stopped to assist, she said the burns were very bad and that some of the leather had stuck to the skin.
Due to the severity of the riders injuries the Netcare 911 helicopter was called to the scene. With additional assistance from the heli crew and flight doctor the patient was stabilised and loaded into the helicopter in preparation for the flight through to Netcare Milpark, a facility with a specialised burns unit.
