8 Injured, R55 closed after truck overturns

Truck overturns, MidrandTruck overturns at Midrand At approximately 15h02 on Friday 11 April 2008, Netcare 911 received reports of a serious collision on the R55 near Pitt road in Blue Hills Agricultural Holdings, Midrand.

Paramedics arrived to find that a truck had overturned and had collided with a bakkie. Victims were still entrapped in both of the the wrecks and two fire engines came to the scene to assist. Fire fighters had to use the “jaws of life” to free occupants from both the vehicles. There was a significant impact on the passenger side of the bakkie and the driver was in a critical condition.

The Netcare 911 helicopter was called to the scene and the patient was placed onto emergency life support before being airlifted to the Johannesburg hospital. The entrapped occupant of the truck was in a serious condition with multiple injuries and he was transported by ambulance to the Netcare Sunninghill hospital before being airlifted to the Johannesburg hospital. Six other people were also injured in the incident and they were transported to the Netcare Sunninghill hospital for further treatment. These six were all extremely lucky to be in a stable condition after they were thrown from the back of the truck when it overturned.

The truck was lying across the road and the R55 has been closed to traffic up until now, the road has subsequently been partially reopened with traffic utilising only one of the lanes.

This incident was attended to by Netcare 911, provincial fire and ambulance services and the Metro police.
