Earlier today I was intrigued by a news story which dealt with a plea by the Automobile Association for a reduction in the legal alcohol limit for drivers. I am in agreement that we need a “strong arm approach” towards drunken driving and this needs the combined efforts from different role players.
In the title I deliberately chose the title “road users” and not “drivers”. Risks are not only posed by drunken drivers but also by drunk pedestrians alongside or on the road. Efforts to remove drunken road users should also focus on our pedestrians!
In the next few weeks the Road Safety & Arrive Alive Blog will discuss the different role players and parts of an effective strategy towards responsible driving. This should include a focus on the following:
• Traffic Enforcement and legislation
We will look into the legal limits and how traffic authorities are planning to use effective enforcement in the battle against drunk driving.
• Equipment
Which equipment can be used at road blocks or even by individuals for “self testing”? We will gain advice from the experts such as Precision Safety Appliances
• Awareness efforts by the alcohol industry
What are the “Drive Dry Campaign” and the “Draw the Line Campaign” and how are these campaigns aimed at responsible drinking? We will consult with the experts from Brandhouse to gain more information.
• Community Efforts / NGO’s
How are community activists planning to address this issue in working with the youth in efforts to create awareness of the risks of drunken driving? Who is “South Africans Against Drunk Driving?”
We can only hope that our efforts to address this topic on the Blog as well as the Arrive Alive Road Safety Website might create further awareness and we would like to invite the on-line community to participate in sharing their suggestions and criticism!
