Since Friday morning until 13h00 on Sunday, 24 August 2008, the Netcare 911 call centre has dispatched emergency vehicles to 155 motor vehicle and 31 pedestrian collisions totalling 186 incidents in Gauteng.

During the course of Saturday night, 23 August 2008, Netcare 911 paramedics attended to multiple pedestrian and vehicle collisions. Six people died as a result of vehicle collisions and three pedestrians were also killed. Below is a breakdown of the more serious incidents that we attended to.

19h24: Intersection of Pretoria Main and Gibson drive in Buccleuch, Sandton:
SAPS vehicle overturned after being struck by a car. Paramedics attended to a total of 4 patients at the scene, fortunately they were all in a stable condition and were transported by ambulances to hospital for further treatment.

19h53: N14 highway near to R511(Sandton) offramp alongside Diepsloot informal settelment:
Unidentified adult male pedestrian was killed after being struck by several vehicles on the northbound side of the highway. A female passenger in one of the cars sustained minor injuries including glass in her eye and was transported to hospital for further treatment. This section of the highway is notorious for pedestrian collisions and warning signs have been erected to inform motorists and pedestrians of the dangers. Unfortunately these warning are often ignored and paramedics attend to numerous fatalities along this section of the N14.

20h10 Intersection of R55 and Theron road close to the N14 highway, Centurion area:
Two unidentified adults; 1 male and 1 female, were struck by the same car that was travelling towards Pretoria. Both victims died as a result of their injuries at the scene. The driver of the car escaped uninjured.

22h25: Nick Toomey street, Davidsonville, Roodepoort:
Four patients were transported to hospital and were lucky to escape with moderate injuries after their car crashed down a small embankment (about 5 meters). There was serious damage to the car as well as the roof which indicated that the car had overturned.

22h28: Beyers Naude drive close to Garden World, Honeydew:
An unidentified adult male was in a critical condition after being struck by a car that was travelling from Garden World towards Honeydew.
The victim was placed onto emergency life support by the paramedics at the scene and was transported by ambulance to the Johannesburg hospital for further treatment.

23h05: close to the intersection of Progress and Ash roads, Roodepoort:
An 18 year old female and a 25 year old male were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in left the road and collided with a tree. The car was severely damaged by the impact and fire fighters had to use the “jaws of life” to free the deceased victims from the wreck.
A Netcare 911 trauma councillor was called to the scene to attend to family members of the victims.

23h40: N1 direction Pretoria near to the N14 interchange:
Three people died as a result of a collision between a car and a 4×4 vehicle, there were no survivors.

23h57: intersection of Witkoppen and William Nicol roads, Fourways:
Two female occupants sustained serious injuries after their car was struck on the passengers side by a 4×4 vehicle. Paramedics administered analgesic medication to both victims in an attempt to ease their pain. Fire fighters had to use the “jaws of life” to removed the roof and one of the doors to free the victims from their wreck. They were both transported to the Fourways hospital for further treatment. The driver of the 4×4 vehicle sustained minor injuries and refused further medical treatment.

03h02: Intersection of Northumberland and Malibongwe roads, North Riding:
One adult male was killed and two others were lucky to escape with relatively minor injuries after their car overturned near to the intersection. It appeared that the deceased was ejected from the vehicle resulting in his fatal injuries.

These incidents were attended to by paramedics from the private and provincial ambulance services, fire departments, SAPS and the Metro Police.
