The Arrive Alive website has received the kind assistance of Deni Brown and Gavin Thomson in making available some of the Mama Taxi cartoons on the Arrive Alive website. The collection of cartoons is now also available in print!

If you thought all taxi drivers were the same, meet Mama Taxi. Proudly South African Mavis and her sister Zandi bravely tackle the busy roads to bring you a woman’s perspective from behind the flying wheels of the taxi industry. This job needs a fearless woman with guts and a steely determination to obey the rules of the road. Shoot a red light? Talk on the cellphone while making a U-turn? Never! Be polite to cops at all times? Of course! Mama Taxi – the collection will appeal to all who share Mavis and Zandi’s world, collectors of cartoons and anyone with a sense of humour. The little pink taxi roars through the pages of five national daily newspapers and if this is your first introduction to the cartoon strip, buckle up for a fun ride!

The collection is a compilation of approximately 450 cartoon strips.
Read what Zapiro, Helen Zille, cartoonist Chip Snaddon and Madam and Eve’s Steve Francis have to say about it. Already in five publications Citizen, Cape Argus, People, and in-flight magazines Mango Juice, Vodaworld magazine, on the Arrive Alive and IOL websites, and in SA Promo – a magazine in London for SA ex-pats.

About the Authors
Deni Brown, a former rock ‘n roll musician, says ‘Mama Taxi is my first attempt at writing comic strips and if I’d known what fun it would be, I’d have started sooner.’ She has published a gift book of inspirational cat tales and is working on a collection of illustrated autobiographies by cats with interesting lifestyles. She lives with two cats on the beautiful False Bay coast.

Gavin Thomson studied advertising in Cape Town, then worked as a colourist and inker in London with clients such as Disney and Warner Bros. He now lives in Noordhoek with his wife and three children. When he’s not drawing Mama Taxi, he produces a weekly editorial strip and illustrates childrens’ books as well as the comic strips Trek Net and Terminal.

“Taxis get such a bad press and I wanted to show the human, humorous side of things. We don’t go into politics or taxi violence. We leave that to others. All the action takes place in and around the taxi and is often more social commentary than being hysterically funny.” [Extract from article in the Citizen, Aug 2007]

We at Highway Mission Centre in Worcester is planning a huge Gospel outreach for the Easter weekend. We would like to invite all Christians countrywide to take part in our Easter-Outreach project. Gospel messages will be available on CD to reach out to drivers of heavy trucks, buses and taxis over the Easter weekend at strategic filling stations near a highway . We will focus on prayer for Road safety as priority number one.

Remember that God promised us that He will never forsake us, therefore we glorify His name for the decline of 31% in fatalities during the December/January season.
