The Arrive Alive website received an interesting enquiry on this topic:

“To whom it may concern,

I am about 5 months pregnant, when I drive I really feel uncomfortable wearing my seatbelt, I am a responsible driver and always use my seatbelt, I do not want to get pulled over for not wearing it could you advice me on this, I also do not want to endanger my baby, by wearing it or even not wearing it.”

This was referred to the KZN Traffic Inspectorate and a reply received:

“With the support of your medical practitioner it is possible to apply to the Provincial Traffic Administration for an exemption in terms of the RT Act. I must however say that there is no absolute rule that such exemption will be granted, nor in my personal view is it desirable to do so. If such an exemption were to be granted you would have to indemnify the Dept. against any damage in respect of yourself and your unborn child and I suspect that the RAF and your own short term insurance company would expect the same. KZNRTI.”

From a Road Safety perspective it is important to stress that the purpose of seatbelts has never been to provide comfort – if they feel comfortable- so much the better! Seatbelts are designed to protect – and especially in those circumstances where you have driven responsibly – but others have not!

When pregnant – be especially attentive to safe driving behavior – your child might one day thank you for having done so!
