I have come across an interesting story from Rush County in the US state of Kansas. This was titled “Trespassing calls about off-road vehicles on the increase”. This story discussed the increase in the number of calls reporting individuals trespassing on private property while riding ATV’s or dirt bikes.
It is said that landowners are upset at the lack of responsibility of those individuals using ATV’s and not gaining prior permission before riding on their property.
This is something that is often the case in South Africa as well. People purchase an ATV or dirt bike and then realize they have no place to ride it so they just go where they want – often causing discomfort to private land owners with their risky and noisy driving behaviour.
Property owners do not want their property damaged or the liability that goes along with someone getting hurt while riding without permission.
The Arrive Alive website and this Blog would like to advise off-road riders to gain permission before riding on someone else’s property. Just because there aren’t any ‘No Trespassing’ signs up does not mean you can go onto private property. We would also like to urge there riders to be attentive to safety aspects and to be aware of the risks of injury. They should wear helmets and protective gear when on these types of vehicles.
