The media liaison officer for the Comrades Marathon Association cautioned the thousands of men and women gearing up for the Comrades on May 24 to exercise caution and not rely on motorists’ driving skills or alertness to keep them safe.
“In most cases, runners will use the pavement where there is one, but we must also always wear white; white shorts, shirts and caps, to increase our visibility. Reflective bands around the waist, on wrists and running shoes, are also a must as it gets dark earlier and light later.”
Runners have been urged to be fully alert at all times. They need to take extra precautions and anticipate a possible problem before it occurs.
Many runners have claimed that there is an attitude of intolerance on the part of motorists. The say that when a runner or cyclist is being followed by a car for his or her protection, other approaching vehicles hoot and become very aggressive, rather than just slowing a little and passing at a safe distance.
