At approximately 09h00 on Sunday morning 19 April 2009, Netcare 911 paramedics responded to reports of a serious collision involving an overturned bus on the R55 at the intersection of Waterberg road in Olievenhoutbosch, Centurion.
Paramedics arrived to find that a red VW had collided with the side of a bus, the rear axle of the bus was sheered off and the bus overturned and came to rest on its side over the width of the R55.
Paramedics attended to 26 people that were alleged to have been in the bus at the time: 1 female passenger was ejected and sustained serious head and facial injuries, she was in her thirties and was in a critical condition and was placed onto emergency life support and was airlifted by the Netcare 911 helicopter and was taken to the Netcare Sunninghill hospital for further assessment and treatment. 12 Victims sustained fairly serious injuries and 8 sustained minor injuries. Therefore 21 injured people from the bus were transported to hospital, an additional 4 passengers and the bus driver refused hospital transportation.
There were said to be 3 people in the red car, the driver allegedly ran away from the scene, 1 passenger was transported by a car to hospital before paramedics arrived at the scene and the exact extent of his injuries is not known. A 16 year old girl sustained a possible fracture to her lower left arm and was transported by ambulance to hospital.
Therefore a total of 22 victims were transported by ambulances from the scene and 1 by private transport.
The injured were transported to the Netcare Sunninghill, Kalafong, Unitas, One Military and Medforum hospitals.
This incident was attended to by paramedics from the private and provincial ambulance services, fire department, Metro Police and the SAPS. A large crowd of onlookers gathered at the scene and the R55 was partially closed to traffic for more than 3 hours.
