Compost spill results in huge delays on N1 highway

During late afternoon peak traffic on Friday 24 April 2009, a large truck load of compost seemed to be accidentally dumped on the William Nicol offramp from the N1 highway in Fourways, North of Johannesburg.

The spillage then became spread out over approximately 150m as the large traffic volumes drove over it until the road became so slippery that cars began to slide sideways and others simply became stuck as their tyres lost traction and literally became “stuck in the mud”.

Netcare 911 was first to arrive at the scene followed by fire fighters from the local Lonehill Fire Department. The road surface was extremely slippery and was a real safety hazard hence the offramp from the N1 southbound was closed to all traffic. The compost was approximately 30cm deep in places. At that stage the bottle neck in traffic had backed-up beyond the Rivonia road exits resulting in huge delays for motorists travelling towards Randburg/Roodepoort. Motorists were then required to drive past the Fourways offramp and then exit at the Malibongwe offramp to get to their destinations, however the added pressure on the Malibongwe exit also resulted in massive delays for motorists.

The Roads Department were informed of the spillage as a large team was required to clear the scene. This incident was attended to by Netcare 911, Lonehill Fire Department and the Metro Police
