There are many expenses we can limit during tough economic times. Those expenses incurred to enhance vehicle and road safety can however not be compromised. The Arrive Alive website received an email yesterday with information and photos of a taxi accident in Johannesburg – One of these photos clearly illustrates the threat of unsafe tyres. This also creates the question – How many of our road users have the means to properly maintain their vehicles? How many vehicle owners will postpone acquiring new tyres and drive a few extra thousand kilometres on unsafe tyres? How often do traffic officials pull vehicles over and check for roadworthiness?

Herewith find a short tyre check list:

• Check tyre pressure when cold
• Check tread depth on tyres
• Examine tyres for penetrations, punctures, cuts and bulges
• Check for stones and remove
• Examine valve caps and valve extensions
• Ensure that tyres are the correct size and the tyres match on each axle
• Check for loose or missing wheel nuts
• Examine all wheels for any damage
• Inspect bearing seals for leaks
• Identify uneven or mechanically induced tyre wear

We would like to urge visitors to also view the section “Tyre Safety” on the Arrive Alive Road Safety Website.
