A visitor to the Arrive Alive website raised this enquiry:

“My enquiry is in regard to a currently licensed driver. Does an over 70 year old have to have a medical or eyes tested annually or a medical certificate to indicate competence to drive?”

The answer to this enquiry is:

“A currently licensed driver that is over 70 only has to undergo an eye test whenever a new driving licence card is ordered (usually every 5 years as the card is valid for 5 years). There is no requirement for annual eye tests.”

This should be something that is a concern to all South Africans. We have recently added content to the Arrive Alive website on Eye Care and Road Safety. This focuses on the need to protect our eyes on the road and alert readers to the dangers posed by glare from the sun.

Much attention is focused on slogans such as “Be Visible Be Seen” – but it is also important that those to whom we need to be visible -can indeed see!!

Do we pay enough attention to have regular eye tests – and is it not important for us to have eye tests more frequently than every 5 years?

We would like to invite road users to view the information on the Arrive Alive website on “Eye Care/ Eye Protection and Road Safety”
