The Gauteng Community Safety Department has warned that it will not tolerate threats by the taxi operators to stop the implementation of the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system. The operators say government should surrender the system completely or face serious repercussions. They say they oppose not only the system but the entire public transport initiative.
Gauteng Safety MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu says those who break the law will find themselves in difficulties. “You can’t break the law and think Government will simply fold its arms. There is an array of laws which we will apply,” he added.
Meanwhile, the taxi industry has claimed that the routes listed by the Government are their intellectual property and has demanded ownership of the new system. It has threatened protests if Government does not recognise their ownership.
The Department says the September deadline for the implementation of the BRT system will not be revised, unless there are infrastructural challenges.
