A three-week-old baby was killed in an accident near the Gamtoos river bridge on the N2 on Thursday, Uitenhage police said.

Inspector Gerda Swart said the baby and a man were thrown out of a BMW after the vehicle slid on the wet road before 9am.

The vehicle broke through a barrier, falling into a culvert. It then became stuck between the road and the bridge.

The man’s leg was amputated during the incident. He was rushed to the provincial hospital in Humansdorp. The driver of the BMW sustained minor injuries, after he and his wife were trapped in the vehicle.

No other cars were involved.
