A 33-year-old Eastern Cape policewoman was murdered after four men hijacked her car near Grahamstown, Port Alfred police said on Thursday.

Captain Mali Govender said Chunyiswa Zamani – stationed at King William’s Town – had been driving in the direction of Peddie just after noon on Wednesday when she was hijacked.

“Members of the Grahamstown dog unit who were also involved in the search, sighted the vehicle parked on a gravel road off the N2 approximately 30km from Grahamstown,” said Govender.

She said Zamani’s body was found nearby.

She had been shot a number of times.

A man driving with Zamani was able to flee the scene unhurt and contacted police.

“We are deeply saddened by her tragic and premature death caused by the brutal slaying. Our deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you,” said Eastern Cape provincial commissioner Mpumelelo Landu.

A case of armed robbery and murder had been opened for investigation.

Landu also assured the family that a special investigating team had been tasked to look into the crime as one of its top priorities.
