Photos of 10 Worst High Speed Crashes

The Arrive Alive website received an email with images of what is described as the “10 Worst High Speed Crashes” We would like to recognize  www.wreckedexotics.com as the source of these images.

Wherever there are wide open roads, there will always be drivers trying to push the limits of their cars. Many have no professional driving experience. When you combine that with a high-performance vehicle, you often end up with spectacular crashes. We’ve compiled a list of top 10 highest speed crashes on open roads. We hope you keep these in mind next time you have the urge to speed.

  1. It is difficult to understand how such accidents happen. Surely there were speed limit signs posted. Maybe the signs could be made bigger – more visible so that they are more easily seen by drunks.

It may not be of any use to those who over-drive the collective ability of themselves and their vehicle or their sight distances. Only education can remedy that.

Make the signs bigger anyway and grow hedges in the dessert areas for speed traps to be hidden. That way millions can be made from safe drivers for every idiot with too much money and no sense of ability.

    🙂 🙂

    • Speed restrictions wont stop these guys. If cars get sold that can reach speeds of up to 315km/h then you will get people who will attempt to drive them that fast. Period.

  2. Bruce,
    What do these reports say?:
    1. “The driver of this 2004 Ferrari 360 Modena was trying to show off to his girlfriend when he lost control” Showing off and overdriving his ability – I would say he qualifies as an idiot.

    2. “This 1998 BMW 5-series was being driven at 135 MPH when a tire blew out” This idiot either drove over something, causing the blow out, or the tires did not have the required speed rating or the tires were in bad condition. So the idiot either drove faster than his sight distance allowed, or he had cheap tires fitted, or he took the cheaper route of not replacing the tires when they had worn out. Definitely an idiot.

    3. “This is what a Mercedes SLK looks like after slamming into a tree at 135 MPH” A narrow tree lined road, according to the picture………… no other car involved……. single vehicle accident…………….. going too fast for circumstances……… circumstances being the collective ability of the car and the driver. Definitely another idiot.

    4. “The driver of this Corvette got his car up to 140 MPH before spinning out and disintegrating on a Dallas, TX highway.” How do you spin out? You try to turn more sharply than what the speed of the car will allow. The picture shows a relatively straight road with trucks and other cars. Oh, I see… he was weaving through traffic at 140mph (225kph). You do not think he is an idiot? I do.

    5. “This TVR was racing another vehicle in Johannesburg, South Africa, when the driver lost it at 140 MPH” What can I say? It takes two to make a race and one of the idiots came short.

    6. “This Lamborghini was only 6 days old and was NOT insured when the owner decided to see how fast he could go on a desert highway in Egypt. A truck cut him off at 150 MPH.” Anyone who travels at 150mph (241kph) close enough to a truck for the truck to cut him off is an…………………. ?

    7. “41 year old driver was killed after losing control of his Enzo at 160 MPH.” Single car crash on a straight piece of road. What does that tell us? The idiot was going too fast to maintain control under the circumstances.

    8. “The owner of this SLR was showing off to his passenger on a desert highway in Qatar. They reached speeds of 160 MPH before losing control” Showing off and losing control…… and you figure he is not an idiot?

    9. “The driver of this 1998 Dodge Viper was pushing 170 MPH when he lost control” Ditto.

    10. “The driver was drunk and pushing the limits of this $1.3 million car on the Pacific Coast Highway when he lost control” Drunk and lost control…… some idiots do this at less than a third of the speed but they are all idiots, nevertheless.

There are many of us who drive fast on public roads all our lives and never lose control. We know when it can be done and when circumstances will not allow it. This is common sense. I am 60, and have been driving for 45 years. Most of my open road travel is on the far side beyond the posted limit and I have never had a high speed accident. I am not the exception, there are many thousands of us who do this for every one idiot with too much money and no sense of ability, who spoils it for the rest of us.

  3. I think that life is short, and cars are fast. Driving fast is something that happens more often than not and these are just some of the examples of the risk. But millions of drivers speed in exotic and custom cars every year safely. The reward is happiness. Speed enjoy the car enjoy the time. Life is all about choices, good and bad and living with the results. Smokers smoke every day knowing the risks, People drink knowing the long term risks, people eat unhealthy knowing the risk ITS CALLED FREEDOM. Its what everyone strides for in life happiness and if the 10 seconds at 150+ mph then enjoy it. If you love cars and love to speed enjoy. What ever you love you should do, and death will come when it comes don’t live life planning every action out. 🙂 enjoy to disagree but at the end of the day everyone does what they want if they want it bad enough.

    • Sorry for bringing up an old post but, MY GOD Mike, youre not too bright, are you? The problem here is not freedom or choosing the risks, the problem is when other chooses them for you. Maby lil peter dont like fast cars, he wants to be a doctor or a firefighter, but maby he dies because of some idiot choose to drive reckless, you see my point? if you only would be hurting yourself then go ahead, live fast, die young. but remember when doing it in trafic you may take a mom, granny and 3 kids with ya on your “fun” ride.

and yeah im not some old gramps bitching about kids beeing stoopid (no offence), im a guy, 20 yrs old and i love fast cars and bikes, but i would never risk others lives for my own happiness, so i ride motocross to get my thrill, yeah it kills ppl too but atleast its ppl who choose to be on the track and knows what may come of it. if you wanna race, do it on a track if you value the lives of innocent ppl.

(sry if my grammar isnt 100% but im not american either)

  5. The problem is not driving fast, its people who push the limits of what is ultimatly a race car, with no racing experiance what so ever. Do you think its a big deal if mario andretti goes 195 on pacific coast highway??? No! But a 18 year old internet millionare in a lambo who just got his license.. yes! Huge deal!! The point is if you dont know what to do with it once you get to that speed. Then dont get to that speed. Leave it to us professionals.

Mario Andretti would not drive 195 on PCH, he does this on the track and drives at safe speeds in public.

The only safe road is an empty road with no entryways or exits.

This still does not account for debris/hazards on the road surface, i.e. glass, scrap metal, pot holes, oil/chemical spills, etc.

But it is safe for the other drivers who are not on that empty road who you might otherwise kill when something goes wrong.

“Leave it to us professionals” are the words of inexperience and foolishness.

Simply put… Unless every vehicle on the roadway is being driven by a trained professional who chooses to put their lives on the line at the time, you are taking your life and the lives of every one else you are in the vicinity of.

Until you understand the gravity and deep responsibility of this concept, you are not even approaching the role of a safe and consientious driver!

    • You should take note that this was NOT an 18-year-old internet millionaire but a professional criminal, who had previously been part of the Ferrari 360 Modena GTC race the year before. I wish people would stop giving people under age 25 such a bad rap. Being 18 does not make you stupid. It makes you ignorant about a lot of things, to be sure, but not stupid. The man driving that Ferrari on PCH was born in 1961. The crash happened in 2006 so that makes him 45 years old at the time… that is 27 years older than an 18-year-old. Think before you type, man! And as for you being a “professional” driver, I seriously doubt it or you would realize professional drivers don’t endanger the lives of other people by driving at racing speeds on public highways.

  6. @ Gerrard, and the others, I fully agree with you, I drive since I am 16, I never stop learning, I teach on race tracks, like the Nürburgring, Now I am 59, and still drive, but not so much anymore, but, I just bought a 997 Gt3, for the tracks, just for fun, but on the road, I drive safely I respect the others, and I anticipate the stupidyties of the idiots. All these idiots, have no idea how much energy and power is in car slaming into a wall or a truck with 100m/hour, This is a natural way selection. Plz forward, many thanks, kind regards, Alexandre

  7. Hunter and the others of the same line of thinking,
While I am not about to ask the government to get involved and regulate the top speed of cars- anymore than they already do thanks- but I have a huge problem with Mario Andretti, or anybody else going much over the speed limit- much less 195 mph- on the PCH or any road. Why you ask? Because myself, my wife, my friends et al drive on these roads too. Anything over about 90 mph is too fast for most drivers to react to, and we all share the road with “most drivers.” Like I tell my kids, I don’t worry about myself, I worry about the “other guy” driving.
In fact, I was witness to a Corvette driver crashing his car at around 100 mph. I pulled over, called 911, and then laughed at the jackass- who survived- for his stupidity. I was also very sure that I made a statement to the CHP about the sriver’s speed and reckless driving prior to the crash. That way his insurance company wouldn’t cover the loss of a $60,000 vette.

    • It would be interesting to know what the posted speed limit was, where this Corvette driver was going at 100mph. Do you think he would have driven at the posted limit if the signs were made larger. Maybe the signs should be posted every half mile.

Do you think he would have driven at the posted limit, or would he have gone at 100mph anyway? We both know what the answer is.

You cannot legislate for stupid. You can set rules like keep right and pass left (or keep left and pass right for driving on the left), do not overtake on a barrier line, do not drink and drive and so on. You can train drivers to keep safe following distances, stay within the limits of what you and the vehicle are capable of and never to overdrive your braking distance. If we all did that, there would never be an accident.

No matter how hard you try and no matter how many inane laws you make, you cannot legislate stupid. Road safety is a common understanding of the rules and a thin white line.

Speed legislation and speed limit enforcement is a cash cow that inconveniences all, makes money off all, for the transgressions and stupidity of the few. The few seldom get caught.

  8. I Used to drive fast quite often but only on empty express ways ( or very very light traffic) i never would weave and put others in danger. but one day i was speeding maybe 10 or 15 mph over the limit and got cut off by an idiot, i went off the road and broke my back. im fine and can walk but it was a very eye opening moment and made me relize that u cant trust the other idiots on the road so happiness isnt worth it. now i enjoy track days and wish i would of took the cars i had in the past to the track. anyways be safe and dont be an idiot!.

  9. no matter what you or me says its steal going to happen just relax look at the news and never try to do this cause you can be next. Don’t fly just drive.
