Pretoria crash leaves one dead, another critically injured

A man was killed and another was critically injured when two cars collided in the intersection of Bremer and Can Der Hoff Roads in Claremont, Pretoria, this evening.

The cause of the accident and series of events leading up to it remains unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Force investigation.

Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that a sports utility vehicle had slammed into the side of the light motor vehicle. The former had skidded to a halt in the middle of the junction whilst the other had come to rest after mounting the curb.

The driver and passenger of the car were both heavily entrapped in the wreckage of the vehicle and had to be cut free by firefighters using the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic rescue equipment.

Once freed both men could be properly assessed by medics. One man unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The other was intubated and placed on a manual ventilator before he was transported to the Kalefong Hospital for further critical care.

Occupants of the other vehicle were uninjured in the incident.

The intersection was closed to traffic while emergency service personnel cleared the scene.
