Operation Lockdown was officially launched in Port Elizabeth today by the Minister of Police, Mr Nhleko and the Acting National Commissioner of the SAPS, Lt Gen Phahlane. Bethelsdorp and Gelvandale are the focus areas because of the high gang-related violence and criminality in those areas.
Factors which generate gang-related crimes include drug dealing, the distribution of unlicensed firearms, turf wars, intimidation of communities and revenge attacks. The purpose of Operation Lockdown is to stabilize those areas through implementing an integrated approach.
Additional SAPS members have been deployed in these areas, as well as dedicated police members from the province and traffic officials. There will be enhanced cooperation between the SAPS and the NPA to ensure arrests and prosecutions.
Minister Nhleko, Lt Gen Phahlane and other SAPS management visited these areas today during operations and interacted with the community and police members deployed.
