Four-year-old killed in Pietermaritzburg

A four-year-old boy was killed this afternoon when he was hit by a bakkie on the R617 in Mafakatini in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal.

ER24 paramedics received the emergency call at 11h21 and immediately responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, ER24 paramedics found the child being treated by another service in the middle of the road.

An ER24 advanced life support paramedics in treating the patient as well as providing him with advanced life support interventions.

Once treated, the patient was loaded into an awaiting ambulance and transported to Life Hilton Hospital for urgent treatment.

While on route to hospital, the child’s vital signs diminished and CPR was initiated. CPR was continued at hospital for a further 40 minutes.

Unfortunately, the child succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at the hospital.

The driver of the bakkie as well as the father of the deceased fortunately did not sustain any injuries.

Local authorities will be investigating this matter further.
