A woman has been killed and another man critically injured this afternoon after a head-on collision between an SUV and bakkie on the R56 in Thornville, Pietermaritzburg.
ER24 paramedics, along with another service, arrived on the scene and found both vehicles in the middle of the road. Debris from the collision was spread across the scene.
On closer inspection, paramedics found the lifeless body of a woman lying trapped inside the SUV. Unfortunately, the woman had already succumbed to her multiple, fatal injuries.
Nothing more could be done for the patient and she was declared dead on the scene.
When paramedics inspected the second vehicle, the found a man in his 60s lying trapped in a critical condition.
ER24 Rescue Medics had to use specialised rescue equipment to extricate the man. Once freed, paramedics initiated numerous advanced life support interventions to stabilise his vital signs.
Once treated, the man was transported by ambulance to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg for urgent attention.
The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
