Pietermaritzburg pedestrian killed, driver injured

A man was killed early this morning after he was hit by a car while walking at the intersection of Burger and Retief Road intersection in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found a bakkie smashed against a tree, while another service was found 100 meters away treating the pedestrian.

ER24 paramedics immediately assessed the pedestrian and found that he had sustained numerous injuries and was in a critical condition. Treatment was started on the as well as numerous advanced life support interventions.

Once treated, the man was rushed to Greys Hospital for urgent treatment.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the man’s vital signs deteriorated. ER24 paramedics, along with hospital staff, immediately began CPR. Unfortunately, after some time, no vital signs returned and the man was declared dead.

The driver of the vehicle was assessed and found to have sustained moderate injuries. He was treated and thereafter transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
