Minister of Transport hands over Torch of Peace to Minister of Basic Education

Gauteng – Transport Minister, Ms Dipuo Peters, will hand over the Torch of Peace to the Minister of Basic Education, Ms Angie Motshekga, at Soshanguve East Secondary School in Soshanguve, Gauteng on Tuesday, 17 January 2017.

The symbolic torch will be lit by Minister Peters and Minister Mosthekga to mark the beginning of the Department of Basic Education’s “Safer Schools” campaign during the commencement of the 2017 academic year. Through the torch, the Department of Transport will also create awareness around road safety at schools.

Transport Department received the torch from the Department of Women in December 2016 to mark the beginning of the Festive Season Road Safety Campaign.

The torch which was used by government as the symbol of South Africa’s national campaign to combat violence against women and children, it is also used to signify the partnership of government departments in working together on various initiatives and campaigns.
