Fifteen people, including a child, were injured when a taxi overturned on the M1 highway between Athol and Glenhove Roads in Johannesburg this morning.

Shortly after 9.30am, paramedics from ER24 and other services arrived on the scene where they found the taxi lying on its side. Most of the occupants managed to climb out of the wreckage before paramedics’ arrival. Several people were treated for minor to moderate injuries.

A one-year-old boy was found with serious injuries. He was stabilised on scene and rushed to a hospital in Johannesburg. The mother of the boy was still trapped inside of the overturned taxi. Local rescuers had to free her. She was later transported to the same hospital.

It is understood that the occupants were on their way to church when the incident occurred. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident is not yet known.
